Sears has played one game this season for Triple-A Portland due to continued troubles with his back.
ANALYSIS
He played first base and has been unable to even practice in the outfield. Former first baseman Jon Knott has been converted to the outfield, and the club is expected to sign another outfielder to fill the hole in the absence of Sears, Xavier Nady, and Tagg Bozied. Knott will likely be moved back to first base until Bozied is healthy.

The ex-Twin was acquired by the Padres in a minor deal near the end of the 2003 season. At age 28, he's had 73 major league at-bats and hasn't done a whole lot with them, batting below .250. He's a bat off the bench if he makes the squad in 2004, but has stiff competition to win that role.
Sears put up a big season at AAA Edmonton (.10 BA, 20 HR, .913 OPS) but is seen as too old to be a true prospect. The Twins have too many options at 1B for Sears to be a factor without major injuries. Still, he could find a home someplace and be a productive role player for a few seasons.
