Escalona is little more than a backup infielder and injury fill-in. If he ends up getting any kind of significant playing time in 2006, the Yankees are in trouble and would be likely to make a move quickly.

Escalona had a solid year in Triple-A as a starter in 2004, but at 26 doesn't project as much more than a utility man.

Escalona impressed everybody with his glove last year, so much so that he'll be in the running for a starting middle infield job in 2003, in spite of the fact that he hasn't hit his weight yet. Only hit .217 in 59 games last year with an OPS of .555. At worst, could become the Rey Ordonez of the American League, but for the fact that the Devil Rays traded for Ordonez; if he can improve his on-base skills, he'll be around for years.
