Fairly or not, Serrano has picked up a career minor leaguer label, having spent much of the last five seasons with various Triple-A affiliates. Given the Reds' struggles finding quality starting pitching, it should have been worth their while to give Serrano a shot, but it didn't work out that way. Given the right situation, he could end up having his "Aaron Small moment."
The conversion to starter went very well for Serrano, who had been a professional reliever since 1998. Through 11 starts, he was 3-1 with a 1.96 ERA in Double-A, earning a trip to Kansas City. Oakland signed him away in November, taking a right-hander who has 589 professional strikeouts in 508 innings pitched.
