Woods returns to again compete for a mop-up role in the bullpen, but he has two problems: 1) he's not on the 40-man roster, and 2) he can't throw strikes. After striking out 66 and walking 53 for Seattle in 2006, Woods struck out 83 and walked 49 in 125.1 innings between Triple-A and Seattle last season. If he finds his way back onto the 40-man roster, Woods likely will face his usual role - call-up filler for spot duty.
Woods will contend for a spot in the Mariners bullpen this season, but he has one problem: he can't throw strikes. He struck out 66 and walked 57 last season and gave up 115 hits in 105 innings. A lefty, Woods has an edge because he can pitch long relief and give the Mariners a spot start if needed. Last season he started eight games.
A finesse pitcher, Woods actually produced better numbers at the major league level in 2005 than he did at Triple-A. He was quite effective in middle relief, posting an April ERA of 2.00 and 2.16 for May. Look for Woods to remain in the bullpen for 2006. With the departure of Jason Christiansen, Woods may claim the top lefty job by default.
After a solid year at Double-A, Woods has a shot to make the Anaheim roster this spring. He might lack the raw stuff of some younger Angels pitching prospects, but he paints the corners and changes speeds like a big league veteran.
Woods might lack the raw stuff of some younger Angels' pitching prospects, but he paints the corners and changes speeds like a big league veteran. Though Woods has no real shot to make the Anaheim roster this spring, a solid year at Double-A could put him on the radar for 2005.
