Vasquez Signs Minor League Deal with Twins
PMinnesota Twins  AAA
October 16, 2013
Vasquez agreed to a minor league deal with Minnesota for 2014, WHAM ABC 13 Rochester, N.Y. reports.
ANALYSIS
Vasquez split time between the rotation and bullpen last season and had a 4.41 ERA and 60:19 K:BB ratio in 87.2 innings. He had good control, but he likely doesn't strike out enough batters to survive in the majors. He'll likely spend the season at Triple-A, but the Twins pitching staff will likely offer plenty of opportunities for playing time again in 2014.

Vasquez took a big step back last season after earning a promotion to the majors in 2007. His K:BB ratio remained solid but the long ball continues to be his Achilles' heel. He allowed 27 homers in 27 starts, a number that perhaps only Petco can help fix. The Red Sox claimed Vasquez on waivers after last season and will likely give him a chance to earn a bullpen job this spring.
Vasquez continued to show good control – something he's done throughout his minor league career – in his first exposure to Triple-A, but struggled with the long ball, giving up 18 home runs. Vasquez had a couple of opportunities in the majors when the Tigers needed a spot starter but failed to capitalize. He allowed 16 earned runs in just 16.2 innings while also allowing seven home runs. If Vasquez can't find a way to keep the ball in the park he's not going to stick in the majors.
Vasquez got himself added to the Detroit 40-man roster this winter after a solid season at Double-A Erie. He has displayed very good control throughout his minor league career but scouts question whether he has the stuff to get major league hitters out. He’ll likely start the year at Triple-A and could put himself in line for a callup with a strong start to the season.
Vasquez continued to show his remarkable control last season walking only 21 batters in 130 2/3 IP between Single-A and Double-A. He's not overpowering so he needs that control to be successful. The Tigers will likely send him back to Double-A to start the season.
Vasquez is considered to have the best control of any pitcher in the Tigers farm system and was solid in his first season at Single-A. He is still several years away from a major league debut, however, and the Tigers are primarily looking at him as a set-up man.
Seventh-round draft choice in 2003. Played college ball at University of California at Santa Barbara.
