Past Fantasy Outlooks
2009
2005
Yabu finished last year with a solid 3.57 ERA, but that was accompanied by an ugly 48:32 K:BB ratio, so that number is unsustainable. He’ll remain a part of San Francisco’s bullpen in 2009, but with the additions of Jeremy Affeldt and Bob Howry, Yabu will be more of a middle innings guy.
Yabu is a 36-year-old free-agent righty from Japan who signed with Oakland for 2005. He went 6-9 with a 3.02 ERA, 1.24 WHIP, and 75/36 K/BB ratio in 116 IP and 19 starts for Hanshin this season and he's posted a 3.57 ERA in 268 games over his 11-year Japanese career. He threw three relief innings for Hanshin in an exhibition game against the Yankees in Tokyo last spring, allowing only one base runner while striking out five. After signing with Oakland in January, Yabu's upside appears to be as a fourth or fifth starter, if he can beat out either Dan Meyer or Dan Haren.
