Although Rodriguez hit .298 in two seasons with the Cardinals, he spent the entire season in the minors, watching Rick Ankiel, Ryan Ludwick and even Skip Schumaker get the call instead of him. Despite a plethora of strange injuries, he was decent during his 55-game stint in Memphis. However, at 29 and with some success in the show, he should have been better. The Cardinals designated Rodriguez for assignment in November; he'll try to win a fourth outfielder job with Tampa Bay on a spring NRI.
In two seasons with St. Louis, Rodriguez has hit .298 and has been one of the more reliable hitters off the bench. Unfortunately, the power he showed in the minors has not been a consistent part of his major league game. He had only two homers and 19 RBI last season, and with the crowded St. Louis outfield, may be forced to spend time at Triple-A Memphis in 2007.
The Cardinals were not expecting much from the minor league journeyman when they acquired him from Cleveland in June. Yet Rodriguez went on a tear at Triple-A Memphis, blasting 17 HR in only 120 AB. His power display earned him a September call-up, where he continued his hot hitting with a .356 average in his first 45 AB. He'll most likely platoon at a corner outfield position with So Taguchi.
