After being pressed into a couple of spot starts for the Yankees in 2007, Wright spent all of last season in the minors in the rotation at Double-A Trenton and Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre. On the positive side, he cut back on his home-run rate at both stops, but Wright's strikeout rate also regressed (from 6.18 K/9IP to 5.06 at Trenton) during that span. The Yankees traded Wright to Milwaukee in February. He could be given a chance to battle for the No. 5 starter's spot this spring if the Brewers don't acquire better options to replace CC Sabathia and Ben Sheets.
Wright was called upon to make two starts for the Yankees in April when injuries tore apart the rotation, and given that he finished 2006 at High-A, he fared pretty well. In 14 starts with Scranton, Wright posted a disappointing 40:42 K:BB ratio in 85.1 IP, so there's plenty of room for improvement. There's an abundance of young right-handed arms in the Yanks pipeline, so Wright will likely have the opportunity of remaining a starter and working at Triple-A until he's needed in New York again.
Wright posted a 12-3 record with a 1.88 ERA for High-A Tampa Bay last season in mixed duty as both a starter (14 starts) and a reliever (23 relief apperances). At 23, he's a little bit old to still be at the High-A level, but Wright's got some potential as left-handed reliever (100 strikeouts in 119.2 innings pitched) down the line. The Yankees liked him enough to protect him from the Rule 5 Draft this past winter.
