2019 Fantasy Outlook
Delmonico was sidelined from mid-May to mid-July due to a hand fracture and never found much sustained success in 2018. He hit surprisingly well in 2017 but came crashing back to Earth, posting a .215/.296/.373 slash line in 318 PA for the White Sox, most of which came as a left fielder. The 26-year-old had a 25.2% strikeout rate and 8.5% walk rate -- both of which are salvageable -- but showcased few strengths during the 2018 season. Delmonico seems unlikely to continue to see such extended major-league opportunities with the White Sox without increased production, as the organization still features a strong farm system, including top prospect Eloy Jimenez, who is on the cusp of being called up. The White Sox released Delmonico (shoulder) on Monday.
ANALYSIS
Delmonico was removed from the 40-man roster after the White Sox needed to open up a spot for Monday's starting pitcher, Odrisamer Despaigne, whose contract was selected from Triple-A Charlotte. Since Delmonico is slated to miss the rest of the season after undergoing shoulder surgery last week and wasn't likely to be tendered a contract for 2020, the organization elected to part ways with him rather than stashing him on the 7-day injured list at Charlotte.

Stat Review
How does Nicky Delmonico compare to other hitters?
This section compares his stats with all batting seasons from the previous three seasons (minimum 400 plate appearances)*. The bar represents the player's percentile rank. For example, if the bar is halfway across, then the player falls into the 50th percentile for that stat and it would be considered average.

* Exit Velocity and Barrels/PA % are benchmarked against this season's data (min 200 PA) and Hard Hit Rate is benchmarked against last season's data (min 400 PA). See here for more exit velocity/barrels stats plus an explanation of current limitations with that data set.

2018 Fantasy Outlook
Before dismissing last season's second-half emergence as a fluke, keep in mind Delmonico was once a highly-regarded prospect. However, personal issues, including a 50-game suspension for using amphetamines in 2014, curbed his development. After struggling in 2015, Delmonico regained prospect status in 2016, slashing .338/.397/.676 in 159 plate appearances at Double-A Birmingham before being promoted to Triple-A Charlotte where he recorded a .246/.320/.388 line. Delmonico opened 2017 at Charlotte, showing across-the-board improvement to .262/.347/.421. Injuries at the big-level prompted a promotion on July 31. Delmonico continued improving, getting on base at a 37 percent clip while slugging .482. The White Sox are acquiring pieces for 2019 and beyond and have nothing to lose by giving Delmonico a good look. His plate skills suggest he can avoid long slumps, increasing chances for success. Have Plan B ready, but there's pathways to profit drafting Delmonico as a fourth or fifth outfielder in mixed formats.
