Recalled from Triple-A
SSMiami Marlins
June 14, 2019
Rivera was recalled from Triple-A New Orleans on Friday, Jordan McPherson of the Miami Herald reports.
ANALYSIS
The 27-year-old was called up to provide infield depth with Martin Prado (hamstring) headed to the 10-day injured list Friday. Rivera carries a slash line of .318/.333/.516 with 11 home runs and 34 RBI through 61 games with Triple-A New Orleans this season, but it's worth noting he struggled at the major-league level in 2018, recording a batting average of just .173 in 160 plate appearances. It's unclear if Rivera will stay with the Marlins once Prado is ready to return, but he'll start at third base and bat seventh Friday.

* Exit Velocity and Barrels/PA % are benchmarked against this season's data (min 100 PA) and Hard Hit Rate is benchmarked against last season's data (min 400 PA). See here for more exit velocity/barrels stats plus an explanation of current limitations with that data set.

Past Fantasy Outlooks
2017
2016
Rivera broke camp with the big league club in a utility role, but he hit a disappointing .196/.213/.261 over the first month-plus of the season before being sent back down to the minors. The 24-year-old spent the rest of the season bouncing back and forth between the majors and minors, though he posted a sub-.230 average and sub-.600 OPS at both levels. The infielder also struggled with his plate discipline, as he struck out 98 times combined at Triple-A Colorado Springs and the majors compared to just 12 walks. Rivera figures to enter spring training in a similar position this season where he'll fight for a backup infield job, but little in his career thus far suggests he'll be able to emerge as anything more than a reserve player even if he does crack the Opening Day roster.
Rivera bounced around the minors with the Brewers in 2015 but earned a September callup after posting a .720 OPS at Double-A Biloxi. He only mustered one hit in 15 plate appearances with the Brewers, but his promising season in the minors still made the Brewers take notice. He's only 23, and if he can continue to improve his hitting and solid defense all around the infield, he could compete for a bench position in the near future. However, with many other infield options who have more major league experience, as well as the imminent callup of top prospect Orlando Arcia, his ceiling seems limited unless he breaks out during spring training.
