2015 Fantasy Outlook
Weickel scuffled in his return to Low-A Fort Wayne in 2014, as his strikeout rate tumbled from 6.7 K/9 to 4.8 K/9 and his walk rate jumped from 2.6 BB/9 to 4.2 BB/9. He struggled with consistency, but still flashed plenty of velocity -- including a 94 mph fastball -- during his time in the Midwest League. After 15 starts, he was demoted, making the move to short-season Eugene where the results were only marginally better. At 6-foot-6, Weickel can challenge hitters with his ability to throw on a steep downhill plane, and he offers a four-pitch arsenal that includes a four-seam fastball, two-seamer, curveball, and changeup. A supplemental first-round pick out of high school in 2012, Weickel still has plenty of time to get on track, but his stock took a considerable hit in 2014. He'll likely try to get back on track in the Midwest League to begin the season, where improved control could go a long way toward helping him finish the year with his first taste of High-A.
