Signs minor league deal with Marlins

November 17, 2016
Garces has signed a minor league contract with the Marlins that includes an invite to spring training, MLB.com's Joe Frisaro reports.
ANALYSIS
The Marlins need left-handed relief depth, and they have addressed that by signing Garces, along with two other unheralded southpaws, to a minor league deal. If he makes the team out of spring training he will work predominantly in low-leverage situations.

Past Fantasy Outlooks

2015
Garces made the Opening Day roster as the Padres' lone left-handed specialist, but command issues and an inability to keep runners off base resulted in him going back-and-forth between Triple-A El Paso and the major league roster. He underwhelmed in several areas, especially K/BB (1.32) and was also susceptible to the home run ball, giving up nine in 38 innings. Garces is unable to generate swing-and-miss stuff with his small frame (5-foot-11, 174 pounds), averaging just 90.9 mph on his fastball. The Padres declined to tender him a contract this offseason, making him a free agent. Given that he is a left-hander, he could catch on with another club as a lefty specialist in low-leverage situations, but any fantasy value will be minimal.
Garces spent most of the year dominating left-handed hitters at Double-A San Antonio, holding them to just two runs and a .124 batting average over 27.1 innings (0.66 ERA). He was certainly no slouch against right-handers, either, with a .240 BAA and 47:11 K:BB over 38 innings, but something strange happened in his time with the big club in the second half of the season. Garces posted a reverse platoon split, allowing a .250/.308/.458 batting line to left-handed hitters and a .182/.182/.273 line to right-handers, but it was a very small sample (nine innings) and Garces was still missing bats at a strong clip while limiting the free passes. He also recorded his first three career holds in the final two weeks of September, perhaps foreshadowing a prominent role toward the back-end of the bullpen in 2015. Alex Torres has likely earned the right to open the year as the top left-handed setup man to begin the year, but he struggled down the stretch and if the issues carry over into Cactus League play, Garces could usurp him for the job.
