Agrees to deal with Orioles
PBaltimore Orioles
January 24, 2017
Berry signed a minor league contract with Baltimore on Tuesday, Roch Kubatko of MASN Sports reports.
ANALYSIS
Berry spent 2016 on the move as he played on four different squads between the Marlins and Padres organizations, ranging from Low-A to Double-A. Overall, his performances were rather lackluster and he finished the year with an ERA and WHIP of 6.32 and 1.85, respectively. Berry has traditionally served as a starter, but may be used as a reliever with the Orioles if his recent struggles persist.

Past Fantasy Outlooks
2016
2015
Berry repeated the Double-A level in 2015, only to get torched over 15 starts. He lost his rotation spot at the end of June and was not much better in the bullpen before he went down for the season with a sprained knee in early August. After the move to the bullpen, Berry allowed three runs in eight innings with 10 strikeouts and five walks. He had a reputation for dominating left-handers and struggling against right-handers, but he had a .289 BAA and 1.55 WHIP against left-handers in 2015. He was, predictably, even worse against right-handers (.322 BAA, 1.77 WHIP). The Marlins claimed Berry off waivers in December, and it would make sense given their lack of starting pitching depth if they moved him back to a starting role. A full-time move to the bullpen would allow Berry to contribute sooner, but there is not much to see here from a fantasy perspective.
The Orioles kept Berry in their rotation at Double-A for all of 2014, where he held his own during his first prolonged exposure to the level. A 50th-round pick in 2009, Berry overcame Tommy John surgery in high school to make it this far, and he's been rising up the ranks within the organization over the past couple of seasons. At Bowie, right-handed hitters gave Berry fits, as all 12 of the home runs he allowed came to righties. Lefties couldn't touch him (23.3% K%, 3.4% BB%), setting the floor at quality LOOGY if he's unable to develop a changeup and keep righties off balance more effectively. Look for Berry to take the next step in his development at Triple-A Norfolk in 2015, while a September callup to help in the bullpen could be on the horizon if injuries don't give him a look as a spot starter before then.
