RotoWire's Preseason Outlooks
2016
2015
2014
  1. Preston Claiborne 2016 Preseason Outlook
Claiborne was hoping to turn things around after bouncing between Triple-A and the majors the past two years, but he never got the chance to do so. Shortly after being sent to Triple-A at the end of spring training, the 27-year-old injured his right labrum before he got to pitch in 2015 and sat out the entire year because of it. He pitched decently in 2014 with the Yankees, producing a 3.00 ERA in 21 innings, so he could be a contender for a low-leverage bullpen role with the Marlins once he is healthy.
  2. Preston Claiborne 2015 Preseason Outlook
Claiborne was shuttled between Triple-A and the big leagues last season, struggling with free passes at both levels and doing little to establish himself in the bid for an Opening Day roster spot. Working with a low-90s fastball, slider, and changeup, Claiborne needs to utilize his secondaries effectively in order to retire big league hitters consistently. His numbers in 2014 likely took a hit because of lost velocity on his fastball, as his average fastball slipped from 93.1 mph in 2013 to 91.0 last season. In his final season with minor league options remaining, he'll likely shuttle between Triple-A and the big leagues. Even if things begin to click again, his ceiling may be that of a middle reliever. After being claimed off waivers by the Marlins during the offseason, Claiborne will try to reach that level in Miami.
  3. Preston Claiborne 2014 Preseason Outlook
Claiborne was a pleasant surprise in the Yankees bullpen throughout much of 2013, but he wore down later on in the season, giving up 14 earned runs in his last 12.1 innings. Claiborne doesn't have a single standout offering, but has pretty good command of all his pitches, and could stick with the Yankees as a middle reliever, albeit one without a ton of upside.
