The Devil Rays have released Johnson, according to the team press notes for Monday night's game against Milwaukee.
ANALYSIS
Johnson was hitting .196 and his contract had already been paid for before the Rays picked him up in April, so this isn't a surprise. Not sure where Johnson goes from here, although the Tigers may be interested as injury insurance for Pudge Rodriguez.

Remember when Johnson was an all-star? Twice? Two seasons and a .233 average later, he's likely on his way out of Colorado. Johnson owners may want their leagues to add runners caught stealing as a category, because his main value these days is his gun behind the plate.
As expected, Johnson's numbers saw a small spike upon arrival in Colorado. In '04, a year older, a year slower, and still due $10 million over the next two season, the Rockies will likely look to move Johnson in the next big deal they pull off. Even with the thin air, Johnson is doing little more than drawing a fat paycheck and keeping the catching gear warm until a younger, cheaper, better option comes of age.
Johnson will step in as the starter following the Mike Hampton deal - the thin air certainly won't hurt his average or power, which were rapidly evaporating in Florida.
