Miceli started the year as the Rays' closer and didn't pitch well at all. Nonetheless, after a DL stint, he was actually pretty effective in a set-up role down the stretch. He'll probably enter 2007 with the same responsibilities, but just like last spring, he could back into the closing role if others don't impress.
Miceli had pitched only 18 1/3 innings when a comebacker on the foot created several stress fractures and ended his season in August. The 13-year veteran is a free agent coming into 2006 and will fill a middle-relief role somewhere in the majors.
Miceli had a fine 2004 season as the Astros' primary set-up man after the trade of Octavio Dotel. The lasting memory of Miceli, however, will be two key meltdowns in the NLCS against the Cardinals. He's set to play 2005 in Japan.
Miceli strung together 30 solid innings down the stretch, posting a 2.10 ERA and 0.967 WHIP in his stint with the Astros and finagled a one-year deal from the team as a result. With Billy Wagner gone, Miceli will pitch in more high-leverage situations this year, a potentially dangerous scenario.
Back where he had his last semblance of success, trying to fight a well-deserved reputation as a manager-killer.
