Worrell has decided to retire from baseball.
ANALYSIS
Worrell was 48-59 with 71 saves and a 3.97 ERA over 678 career appearances. He spent his final season in San Francisco, beginning the year as the Giants' closer but pitching in his last game on June 8. His decision was heavily impacted by an inability to shake off a persistent neck injury that can only be corrected by surgery.

After joining the Giants last season, Worrell pitched 20.1 ineffective innings (7.52 ERA) before spending time on the DL with a bulging disc in his neck. When it never improved, he later had arthroscopic surgery on his throwing shoulder, where labrum damage was repaired and scar tissue was removed from the AC joint. He decided to retire this offseason as a result.
Worrell recovered nicely, relatively speaking, down the stretch for Arizona last year after coming over from the Phillies. He'll fill a set-up role with the Giants and could help in deep leagues, especially those that count holds.
Worrell had a solid season for the Phillies as a set-up man and fill-in closer for Billy Wagner. He struggled during the middle of the season when Wagner got hurt and Philadelphia fell out of contention. Worrell showed some signs of age by allowing a .310 average to left-handed batters and 10 HR overall. He may be nearing the end of the line, but the Phillies lack of veteran alternatives gives him some job security.
Worrell won't save 38 games again. He has Billy Wagner for a teammate now, so he'll return to being a set-up man. Given the degradation in his ratios and his shaky second half and postseason, even that might be optimistic. Worrell is someone to avoid in 2004.
Worrell enjoyed the best season in his career in 2002 at the age of 35, going 8-2, 2.25 in a set-up role, pitching in 80 games (third-highest in the NL), and giving up only three home runs in 72 innings (and, over the last two years, just seven gopher balls in 150 innings). We caution you not to overbid on Worrell, though, because guys that have career years at the age of 35 almost never have new career years at the age of 36. And, that's especially true of set-up men, where a couple of bad outings can change usage patterns in a heartbeat, potentially destroying whatever little fantasy value they have.
