Davis, the former 1995 overall No. 2 draft pick who made the majors as a catcher, has been signed by the Reds after he converted to pitching in independent ball, the Cincinnati Enquirer reports.
ANALYSIS
The odds are long that Davis will make the majors as a pitcher, but he'll be an interesting player to watch. The Reds plan to have him compete for a spot at Double-A.

A throw-in to the Freddy Garcia deal, Davis did little in 2005 to make the Mariners regret losing him. Considering that Seattle was suiting up the likes of Wiki Gonzalez behind the plate, that's no small feat. Now recovering from Tommy John surgery, he'll probably have to try a comeback elsewhere.
It's amazing what lowered expectations can do. A total bust in Seattle, Davis was a throw-in to the Freddy Garcia deal and promptly went on a mini-tear in his new home. His final numbers with Chicago were really no better than what he put up in 2002, but suddenly the White Sox think they might have something. They came to their senses in January, signing A.J. Pierzynski to be their starting catcher.
Davis is good for 250 bats a year as he shares catching duties with Dan Wilson. Davis is still the future at catcher for the Mariners, but did little to enhance that position last season as he slumped badly in the second half and hit only .236. Davis has more power than Wilson (two more homers and three more doubles in 70 fewer at-bats), but needs to improve his average and on-base percentage (.284). Davis' prospects as a fantasy catcher rely chiefly on league depth.
Davis should get somewhere around 250 at-bats as the backup catcher to Dan Wilson. Some have speculated that his size makes him vulnerable to injury as a catcher.
