After 12 unimpressive outings, including five starts, with the Mariners in 2004, Nageotte spent most of 2005 at Triple-A Tacoma where he recorded a 2.65 ERA out of the bullpen. His K/BB ratio, though, was still lacking at 35/22. He seemed to figure things out in the Arizona Fall League, striking out 24 and walking four in 27 innings over six starts. Nageotte will contend for a relief spot in spring training. Until he achieves more consistency, though, he's a risk.
One of the system's top prospects entering last season, Nageotte did not show much in his 12 outings, including five starts, with Seattle. He needs a strong spring to make the club in 2005. He could start, but likely will pitch in relief.
Nageotte has a chance to land in the Mariners' bullpen this year. He's perhaps the top prospect in the organization and has two plus pitches, a fastball and slider. The Mariners had to force him to throw his changeup, though, at Double-A San Antonio, where he finished 2003 11-7 with a 3.10 ERA and a league-leading 157 strikeouts in 154 innings. He started for the Missions, but he'll likely begin in the bullpen in the majors, following the same route as Joel Pineiro and Rafael Soriano. He's an excellent keeper pick.
