Whitesell had a small taste of the majors with Arizona last season, but ultimately spent the majority of his time at Triple-A Reno. The D-Backs' acquisition of Brandon Allen really dropped his value in July and he was later non-tendered. He signed with Washington and could win a bench job this spring, but nothing is guaranteed to power-hitting left-handed hitters that are raking in the Pacific Coast League beyond their late 20s. If he were ever given 450 big league at-bats, 20-25 homers are within reach, but it doesn't appear as though that opportunity will be afforded to him.
Whitesell enjoyed plenty of success in the Pacific Coast League after the D-Backs claimed him off waivers from the Nationals in March. Even as a 26-year-old, Whitesell's .328/.425/.568 line with good power (26 homers) is impressive when you consider that he doesn't have bad splits against left-handed pitching or any glaring flaw that will prevent him from getting a look at the next level. That said, tearing up the minor leagues at his age suggests his future is likely as a part-time player, unless he ends up in an organization with less corner infield depth than Arizona, as he currently has Conor Jackson and Chad Tracy -- among others -- in front of him in the pecking order for at-bats with the D-Backs.
Whitesell put up very good numbers at Double-A, but as a 25-year-old repeating the level that's not a big accomplishment. With Chris Marrero struggling to find a position in the Nationals system and possibly destined for first base, the window for Whitesell to establish himself as a major leaguer is extremely narrow.
