Brown got a cup of coffee with the Indians but spent most of the campaign at Triple-A Columbus. His season got off to a delayed start thanks to a torn meniscus suffered in spring training but he did manage a .298/.341/.463 line at Triple-A. His lack of power (he's never hit more than 15 homers in a season in the minors) and advanced age (27) doesn't point to anything more than a utility role, but he enters spring training as the team's primary backup at first base to Matt LaPorta.
Brown added to his impressive minor league resume by winning the batting title in the International League (Triple-A) with a .336 average after having won two previous MVP awards. He's been moved from third base to first base to left field and the Indians finally decided to add him to their 40-man roster over the winter. He's not much of a prospect and will need to add some power to hold down a corner spot at the major league level, but Brown could factor into things this spring with the uncertainty surrounding Matt LaPorta. Hey, if your other options included Andy Marte you'd be turning over any semi-interesting looking rock as well.
Brown was left off Cleveland's 40-man roster after a .281/.337/.417 season at Triple-A, failing to show enough power for a 24-year old first basemen at Triple-A. As a two-time minor league MVP he'll most certainly get picked up by someone but he'll need to develop some power quickly if he's to carve out much of a career.
Brown earned his second straight MVP award for his minor league season, earning the Eastern League MVP by hitting .333 with 11 homers and driving in 76 after taking home the Carolina League hardware the season before. That's a nice resume but he's not a future star. He turned 24 in the offseason and without much room to add to his six-foot frame, we're not likely to see an immediate power spike. He does work the count well and boosts a solid K:BB ratio but he's in an organzation that's pretty well stocked with first basemen. He'll spend most of 2008 at Triple-A but doesn't figure to have much of a fantasy impact as long as he's stuck at first base.
