Pastornicky didn't make his spring debut until March 21, having been delayed significantly at the start of camp due to his recovery from ACL surgery, but he beat the odds and managed to avoid the DL to start the year. Manager Fredi Gonzalez gave him just two starts in the season's first month, however, and Pastornicky flopped in a very brief audition in the starting second base role in May after Dan Uggla finally wore out his welcome, ultimately earning him a ticket back to Triple-A Gwinnett late in the month. His surgically-repaired knee flared up briefly, but it proved to be just a minor setback, and Pastornicky returned to post a .313 average with Gwinnett after the All-Star break. It wasn't enough for the former fifth-round pick to earn a September callup, and while Pastornicky managed to hold onto his 40-man roster spot at the Rule 5 deadline, the 25-year-old's offensive limitations are well established at this point and it wouldn't be a surprise if he lost his roster spot during the season.
After starting the year with Triple-A Gwinnett, Pastornicky got the call in late April when Jason Heyward hit the shelf following an emergency appendectomy. Pastornicky then bounced up and down between Gwinnett and Atlanta, seeing only occasional chances with the big club, before a torn ACL ended his season in August. The 24-year-old has yet to show much at the major league level, but he's flashed a consistent bat and quality on-base skills at the Triple-A level (.299/.354/.398). He could potentially be in line for extended playing time in the majors if the Braves manage to unload Dan Uggla. Pastornicky's knee is expected to be fully recovered by the start of spring training.
Pastornicky has likely missed his chance to earn a full-time starting job with the Braves, because of his failing bat. In a 76-game tryout last season, his hitting never arrived. That's not a big surprise as his numbers in the minors were never fantastic. Pastornicky's defense is top notch, though, and he will probably develop into a nice utility player if his hitting doesn't improve. There is hope for his bat, though, and a .407 OBP in a 27 game Triple-A stint in 2011 proves that. Look for Pastornicky to spend the season back in Triple-A to continue focusing on improving his hitting while Andrelton Simmons appears to be the preferred option at shortstop in Atlanta.
Pastornicky had a breakout season in 2011 that could put him in position to be Atlanta's starting shortstop as early as 2012. He improved in his second season at Double-A by hitting .299/.345/.414 with 20 stolen bases in 90 games. He then was promoted to Triple-A where he hit a scorching .365/.407/.413 in just 27 games. While Pastornicky is seen as a strong defensive player, it's not clear he'll hit enough to be a regular in the majors, his lack of power may limit his upside and the Braves look deep in shortstop prospects. Still, Pastornicky could emerge with the starting shortstop job this spring if the Braves don't acquire a veteran shortstop.
