Asencio signed a minor-league contract with the White Sox on Thursday.
ANALYSIS
Asencio didn't play affiliated ball last season, despite logging four relief appearances with the Orioles a season earlier. The 30-year-old owns a career 5.30 ERA over 56 MLB innings, which will probably preclude him from making many waves with the White Sox in 2015. Expect him to spend most of the season at Triple-A Charlotte.

White Sox Team Preview: Phase Two
February 20, 2015
The White Sox made big strides last season, then were big players this offseason to give Jose Abreu more help. Will it be enough to contend in the AL Central?

2009
Asencio missed all of the 2010 season due to visa issues and also changed his name in the process (he formerly was Luis Valdez, which he was using as a false name). He picked up right where he left off with strong strikeout rates in the minors, but only got a few brief trials in the big leagues. His walks did increase slightly last season, so he'll need to reverse that trend to establish himself in the majors. Even at age 27, Asencio could be a productive setup man, but seems to get lost in a pitching-rich organization.
Valdez had a strong 75:19 K:BB ratio in 71.1 innings with 27 saves and a 3.38 ERA at Triple-A Gwinnett. His good strikeout and control numbers say he could be a sleeper if he wins a regular major league role, even if he's a little old to be a top prospect since he'll turn 26 this season. He'll compete for a bullpen job during spring training.
Valdez had a breakout season at Double-A Mississippi last season with a 2.76 ERA and 77:28 K:BB ratio in 65.1 innings. At age 25 come May, his upside would seem to be limited, but Valdez could rise quickly given Atlanta's problems in the bullpen the past two seasons.
