ANALYSIS
Martinez's right shoulder ailed him throughout the season, holding him to two major league appearances before opting for surgery in early July. A seven-to-eight month recovery is in order, which places his ability to pitch on opening day in major question. The 31-year-old right-hander will likely have to accept a minor league contract heading into next season, with a potential invitation to spring training in store.

Rest and rehab failed to eradicate the shoulder pain that sent Martinez to the DL early in the year, and the right-hander underwent season-ending surgery in July, after making a combined five appearances between Atlanta and the minor leagues. His timetable for recovery was set at seven-to-eight months following the procedure, putting him on track for spring training, but the Braves declined to tender Martinez a contract in the offseason, and it looks like he'll be moving on. If healthy, Martinez figures to earn a long-relief gig elsewhere, a role in which he enjoyed relative success in 2011 and 2012, with a combined 3.63 ERA and a K/BB above 3.0 in both seasons.
Martinez has been a big part of the Braves' league-best bullpen of the last two years, pitching more innings than any other Atlanta reliever over that span. Martinez has not been the most effective Braves reliever, but he is often called on to pitch multiple innings. Unfortunately for fantasy owners, Martinez does not offer much since he's not used in high-leverage situations despite the high number of innings. He is not a hard thrower and consequently does not strike out enough batters to make him fantasy relevant. Look for him to continue chewing up frames in relief for Atlanta again in 2013.
Martinez gets lost amid a deep Atlanta pitching staff, but he had a productive season in the majors with a 3.36 ERA and .966 WHIP. While he doesn't have a great strikeout rate (6.7 K/9IP), it's strong enough since he generates ground balls (51.7 percent of batted balls in his career in the majors) and has great control. He probably won't repeat his meager WHIP number due to a very low .230 BABIP, but he should put up another solid season in middle relief. However, he may not have much fantasy value or have a high-profile role amid a deep bullpen.
Martinez was Florida's minor league pitcher of the year in 2009, but he was exposed on waivers and the Braves picked him up last spring. At age 29, he's too old to be considered a top prospect, but he could find a role in the Atlanta bullpen after a strong showing at Triple-A. Martinez struck out 8.5 K/9IP and displayed good control at Triple-A before holding his own in Atlanta with a strong 22:6 K:BB ratio in 26 innings. While he only throws in the low-90s, he gets groundballs (over 50 percent groundball outs the past two years). He'll compete for a middle-relief role next spring.
Martinez, the Marlins' Minor League Pitcher of the Year, was effective out of the Double-A rotation but his fastball/slider repertoire is better suited for the bullpen in the majors. He struggled after his first callup, but didn't look out of place after his second, and could compete for a job with the Marlins in the spring.
