ANALYSIS
Gillies is still just 26, but he's shown little in recent seasons to suggest a breakout could still be coming. He's posted an OBP below .300 in each of his last two minor league campaigns, with his mark falling to just .270 with the Phillies' Triple-A Lehigh Valley affiliate in 2014. While Gillies did smack 10 homers in 2013, most of those came at Double-A. He has posted just a .303 slugging percentage in 106 games at Triple-A.

Gillies opened last season at Triple-A Lehigh Valley, but a terrible start to the year got him demoted to Double-A Reading. His bat started to come around in June, and the Phillies returned him to Triple-A in July, where he finished the season with mediocre numbers, before an August hamstring injury ended his season. Gillies has struggled throughout his career with hamstring issues, but at this point, the lack of progress with his offensive game is the bigger concern. He is now 25 years old, and it is looking like a reserve role in the majors might be the best outcome for Gillies. He will open the year back at Triple-A.
Gillies has fallen off the prospect radar over the past few seasons due to a series of hamstring injuries that have limited his playing time. He topped 200 at-bats last season for the first time since 2009, spending the majority of his time in Double-A, but injuries still limited his opportunities. A concussion sidelined him for a significant period of time, and then he was suspended after a verbal confrontation with a team bus driver due to his frustrations over yet another hamstring strain. Gillies also was limited for a short period during the Venezuelan Winter League with a hamstring strain. He's likely headed to Triple-A this season, and still needs to prove he can stay healthy for a full season before he can be taken seriously as a prospect again.
Gillies, 23, has been unable to stay on the field because of injuries the past couple of seasons. He played in just three games for High-A Clearwater in 2011, but managed to stay healthy while playing for Scottsdale in the Arizona Fall League this offseason. Gillies was given a 40-man roster spot this winter based on his potential, but he really needs to put together a full season of play in 2012 to prove he is still a prospect.
The 2010 season was a lost year of development for Gillies. A hamstring injury forced him to miss a significant chunk of time and an arrest for cocaine possession, a charge which was eventually dropped, didn't help his image. Gillies has good speed and has shown a good eye at the plate prior to last season. The Phillies will be looking for him to bounce back and show why he was considered one of the organization's better offensive prospects entering the 2010 season.
Gillies followed his 2008 Northwest League MVP campaign with an equally impressive year at High-A High Desert last season. His .341 average ranked third in the Cal League, while his .430 OBP was second. What's more, he stole 44 bases, drew 60 walks and played all three outfield positions with a very strong arm. The Mariners traded him to Philadelphia in the Cliff Lee deal in the offseason, and his combination of plate discipline and speed makes him an intriguing option.
