Rivero signed a minor league contract with the Red Sox prior to the 2014 season and played at Double-A Portland and Triple-A Pawtucket, slashing a combined .264/.324/.379 in 105 games. Primarily a third baseman, Rivero also played shortstop and left field while with the Sea Dogs and PawSox. He finished 2014 with a five-week stretch in Boston, getting just eight plate appearances in four games played. Those eight plate appearances earned him a distinction, though. He went 4-for-7 with two doubles, a homer and a walk for a 1.911 OPS, the highest OPS in major league history for a player with at least six plate appearances. Despite that honor, Rivero was waived in the offseason and claimed by Seattle. The Mariners non-tendered Rivero but brought him back on a minor league deal with a spring training invite.
After being claimed off waivers from the Phillies, Rivero put together a very solid season at Triple-A. Unfortunately he did it for an organization with an established franchise player at third base in Ryan Zimmerman, and an uber-prospect in Anthony Rendon who would likely get the nod at the hot corner should anything happen to Zimmerman. Given his lack of power, Rivero profiles best as a bench bat and corner defensive sub anyway. If he stays with Washington that seems like the best he can hope for.
Rivero had his second straight disappointing season at Double-A Akron, hitting just .232 and slugging .325. His inability to control the strike zone prevents him from taking advantage of his size (6-foot-3, 220 pounds) as he's never slugged higher than .411 in any minor league season. He'll turn 23 in May and needs to show signs of development. Rivero was claimed off of waivers by the Phillies so perhaps an organizational change will kick-start things.
