Coyle dealt with a few nagging injuries in 2015 that limited him to just 39 games. In between his inactive stints, Coyle had a rough go of it overall, hitting just .159 (20-of-126) while striking out in 29.7% of his 148 plate appearances. But he flashed the same power he’s showcased in recent years –- eight of his 20 hits went for extra bases –- which makes him so intriguing. The ability to power up from a middle infield spot keeps him relevant. Ultimately, it will be his ability to hone his aggressiveness, recognize pitches, and improve strike-zone awareness that will dictate how high he will rise in the major leagues. Defensively, he’s sound with good footwork around the second base bag and has increased his versatility with time at third base as well. He has just enough pop to handle a third-base assignment. Coyle’s got good instincts on the basepaths, too, successful on 87 percent of steal attempts. His spot on the 40-man roster may be in jeopardy, but there’s enough there to keep an organization interested.
Coyle continues to be an intriguing prospect, offering power potential from a middle infield spot. He's hit 55 homers in four minor league seasons, including 16 last year for Double-A Portland. His extra-base power and speed (13 steals, caught once in 2014) are legit strengths in his game, and he added some position versatility, getting a significant number of starts at third base. The downside is an aggressive approach at the plate which leads to a high strikeout rate, and an inability to get on base consistently. Despite a career-high .371 OBP last season, it was fueled entirely by an unsustainable elevated BABIP, as his OBP in the second half was just .293. He participated in the Arizona Fall League, so the Red Sox still hold confidence in his ability and he was added to the 40-man roster in the offseason. His path to regular playing time in Boston is blocked, making it likely that Coyle will spend all of 2015 at Triple-A Pawtucket barring a trade.
Coyle was showing off a good bat in April and May before injuries derailed his season. First, a knee injury killed two and half months, then an August elbow did him in. Through it all, he hit 14 homers and had a pretty hot stick before the injuries. Coyle's an aggressive swinger and is susceptible to strikeouts -- he struck out 29 percent of the time. That's a concern entering 2014. His glove is adequate, but his value is tied up in his bat. The emergence of Mookie Betts creates a middle infield log jam this coming season at Double-A Portland, where Coyle, Betts and Deven Marrero are expected to share at-bats at second base, shortstop and DH.
Coyle had a nice second half of 2012, his first season at the High-A level, indicating he can make adjustments to the advanced competition. He shows pretty good power for a second basemen. He still has trouble with pitch recognition and balls on the outer third of the plate. An ability to cover the plate and hit to all fields is necessary for continued advancement, as he's an average fielder with average range. Still, he's got the good makeup that drives him to meet challenges. He'll finish the upcoming season at Double-A, but we're not sure he'll start there.
Coyle, 20, finished his first full season of professional ball at Low-A Greenville showing to be a capable defender at second base, some speed on the bases, and good power numbers as a middle infielder. Half of his 95 hits were for extra bases. The season began slowly and he had to deal with a mid-season HBP that required some dental attention, but he responded with a good second half. Continued refinement in his approach and selectivity at the plate, perhaps generating more base hits, is what we'll be looking for in 2012.
The Red Sox (and a million dollars) pried Coyle away from North Carolina last summer and he began his professional career in the rookie Gulf Coast League and continued on to the Fall Instructional League. Along with good speed and instincts on the base paths, Coyle has a smooth swing and displayed an advanced approach at the plate. Defensively, he'll begin as a second baseman with potential to develop as a shortstop or third baseman. Acclimating to the professional level is the order for Coyle in 2011. The Red Sox will look for an ability to hit to all fields and how he handles professional off-speed stuff this season.
