ANALYSIS
Cabrera hasn't pitched in the majors since 2012, and he allowed 10 earned runs and 12 walks over 11.1 innings of relief work for Triple-A Fresno this season. The 27-year-old lefty faces a difficult road back to the big show.

Past Fantasy Outlooks
2013
2012
The Rockies' mostly fruitless search for starting pitching options last year ultimately led them to call up Cabrera from Double-A in late June. Cabrera's success is based on his pinpoint control rather than any sort of dynamic fastball or breaking pitch, and his unimposing arsenal proved particularly fatal in his two starts with the Rockies, as he gave up three home runs over 5.2 innings. Cabrera will almost certainly begin the season at Triple-A Colorado Springs, a level that seems better suited to his current ability. At 25, Cabrera has room for development and stands to find success at Triple-A through his excellent strikeout and walk rates, but it is difficult to imagine him ever becoming effective at Coors Field unless he can dramatically trim the 1.7 HR/9 he posted at Colorado Springs last season.
Cabrera is a classic case of a prospect that gets more love from his stats than for his stuff. He struck out a whopping 217 batters between Low-A Asheville and High-A Modesto over 167 innings, walking just 41 in the process. He did this at the age of 23, having signed at a relatively late age from the Dominican Republic as a 21-year old. Cabrera doesn't get much love from most prospect gurus because of his size (6'0", 160 pounds), average fastball and, most importantly, a lack of a reliable breaking pitch. Instead, he has achieved his results from superb control and a fantastic changeup. The upper levels of the minors should provide a better test of his repertoire.
