Trahan has been dropped down to short season Hillsboro, reports Zach Buchanan of the Arizona Republic. The 21-year-old posted a .138/.210/.285 line with five home runs and a 11:62 BB:K ratio in 130 at-bats for High-A Visalia.
ANALYSIS
Trahan still has youth on his side, and he is back to catching full-time, but has yet to show he will hit enough to reach the majors - he has a .228/.308/.427 line in almost 1200 minor league at-bats. His bat simply has not matured as hoped when the D-backs made him a first round pick in 2012.

Trahan, Arizona's first-round pick in 2012, did not see action with any of the organization's full-season affiliates in 2013, instead spending the year between extended spring training and in the Pioneer League with Missoula. Considered a long-term project as a player drafted out of high school, Trahan will likely move up to Low-A South Bend in 2014, but he may be a player who requires a full season at each of the first three full-season minor league levels before he is considered an option at the big league level. The Diamondbacks want to keep him behind the plate, and the pace with which he picks up the crucial elements of playing the position will dictate his move through the minors more so than his bat, which has shown plenty of pop (.266/.370/.467) through his first two professional seasons.
Trahan was the D-Backs' first-round pick in June, but he was limited to rookie-ball and instructional league work in 2012 while hitting .281/.422/.473 over 49 games. Drafted out of high school, Trahan's defense may slow his progress through the minors, but his bat should be more than adequate. With Miguel Montero locked in for the foreseeable future, Trahan is a dynasty league option several years away from getting on the radar in Arizona. Look for his first full professional season to come at Low-A South Bend in 2013. His timetable to the big leagues could be accelerated if it's determined that he needs to move out from behind the plate, but he'll likely get a couple of seasons to see how he progresses before that decision is made.
