Garcia (wrist) was released by the White Sox on Friday.
ANALYSIS
Garcia has been dealing with wrist soreness over the past few weeks, and recently began a wrist strengthening program in order to get back into game shape. He will now start looking for a new home after being let go by Chicago as the club begins cutting down the roster for Opening Day. In 2017, Garcia hit .238/.305/.400 with two home runs and 12 RBI in 44 games. Even if he's able to latch on with another organization in the near future, Garcia may head to Triple-A to begin the 2018 campaign.

Garcia was one of two former Pittsburgh prospects brought in by the White Sox for an opportunity to play in Chicago last season. He turned in 25 in September, but his debut as a replacement-level player did little to bolster his chances of getting another long look in 2018. His splits against left-handed pitching may steer him toward a small-side platoon role to begin the season, as he hit southpaws at a .250/.341/.444 clip (.786 OPS) while hitting just .232/.286/.377 (.663 OPS) against righties. In addition to the occasional success against lefties, Garcia showed the ability to draw walks after joining the White Sox, taking more free passes at Triple-A and in the big leagues than he did throughout his time in Pittsburgh. Most likely, he'll serve as a bench outfielder for the White Sox, if he's not sent back to Triple-A Charlotte to begin the season.
Despite a rocket arm and a power bat, Garcia has seen his career stall out at the Triple-A level. The 24-year-old has put up back-to-back seasons hitting .246 and .245, respectively, for the Indianapolis Indians. He's compiled a 43:207 BB:K in those two seasons and unless he improves his plate discipline, it's unlikely he'll hit enough to make an impact in the majors. Garcia also suffered a power outage in 2016, totaling six homers in 499 plate appearances. He hit between 10-18 home runs in his each of his previous four seasons. Blessed with one of the best outfield arms in the organization, Garcia has a chance to become a backup outfielder.
The 23-year-old has poked at least 15 homers in each of his last four minor-league seasons. What he’s got in power, however, he lacks in plate discipline. Garcia posted a combined .275/.314/.431 slash line split between Double-A and Triple-A but struggled at the higher level — his OPS fell from .794 to .704. In addition, his 123:23 K:BB ratio was actually his best in three years. Pittsburgh is bereft of power at the upper levels, guaranteeing Garcia will get an elongated opportunity to prove himself (and likely increase whatever trade value he offers), but the odds are against the all-or-nothing slugger.
Garcia, 22, is a power-hitting outfield prospect who has averaged 17 home runs and 143 strikeouts over the last three seasons. He has been one of the league's younger players at each stop along the way. In 2014, Garcia hit .271/.311/.478 with 18 homers and 63 RBI in 474 plate appearances at Double-A. He's done well for his age, but the lack of contact (24:145 BB:K ratio) is troubling. At some point in 2015 he could see time at Triple-A, but that's only if he improves a bit with his contact ratios. Pittsburgh is set in the outfield at the major league level and has the likes of Austin Meadows ahead of Garcia in the minors, making it possible the team trades him for help in other areas.
