Irwin signed a minor-league contract with the Rangers on Friday, MLB.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Irwin has been out of baseball all season, and the extensive time off will probably prevent him from emerging as a starting option for the Rangers. Instead, he'll look to rebuild his value in the minor-league ranks, most likely settling at Triple-A Round Rock, where he pitched in 2014. In 51.1 innings with Round Rock (10 starts) last season, Irwin went 5-2 with a 3.51 ERA and a 56:25 K:BB ratio.

2013 Fantasy Outlook
Despite having little experience above Double-A and just average stuff, Irwin has a chance to make his major league debut in 2013. The right-hander spent most of 2012 with Altoona, where he crafted a 2.93 ERA and 1.09 WHIP in 104.1 innings. An 83:17 K:BB ratio illustrates what Irwin is all about -- control. For his career, he sports a 5.13 K/BB mark. Irwin won three of four Triple-A starts late in the season and will likely start there in the spring, with a trip to PNC Park possibly lying in wait. While his command is top-notch, a mediocre repertoire decreases his shot at fantasy relevance.
