The 27-year-old Shirek had not been much of a blip on the prospect radar, but the White Sox opted to protect him from the Rule V draft after he threw 170.1 innings for Triple-A Charlotte in 2012. Shirek pitches to contact and keeps the ball on the ground, and there is a chance he will be eating innings for the White Sox's pitching staff at some point over the next few seasons.
