Latches on with Texas on minors deal
PTexas Rangers
February 13, 2017
LaFromboise agreed to a minor league contract with the Rangers on Monday, Jeff Wilson of the Fort Worth Star-Telegram reports.
ANALYSIS
The left-hander spent the early portion of 2016 in the Phillies organization, but he was released in early June after posting a 5.94 ERA out of the bullpen for Triple-A Lehigh Valley. Although the Rangers are a bit thin in left-handed pitching, LaFromboise will likely spend 2017 in an organizational depth role after not receiving an invitation to major league spring training.

LaFramboise is a 29-year-old left-handed pitcher with a deceptive delivery who gets by without superior stuff. The definition of a LOOGY, he appeared in 11 games for Pittsburgh, allowing one earned run in eight innings. He’s compiled a 3.63 ERA in 22 innings split between three MLB seasons and will fight for a bullpen spot again in 2016, this time with the Angels. LaFramboise, a French surname meaning “raspberry,” probably won’t bear fruit for fantasy owners.
The Pirates claimed LaFromboise off waivers in late August and used the situational lefty in six games, during which he allowed one run (a homer) in 3.2 innings. He picked up a pair of holds and generally looked better than expected, but in the end, he's little more than a LOOGY. LaFromboise doesn't throw hard (89.7 mph fastball) but has a deceptive delivery. Given the Bucs' precarious bullpen situation, it's possible that LaFromboise could find himself with a bit role, but the 28-year-old hasn't shown the ability to stick in the big leagues before. The reliever pitched 10.2 frames for the Mariners in 2013, allowing seven runs.
A 6-foot-4 left-hander, LaFromboise was an eighth-round pick in 2008. He finally got a shot at the big leagues last year, and in three stints with Seattle totaled 10.2 innings in relief. His low three-quarters delivery is deceptive, especially to left-handers, which has helped LaFromboise post solid strikeout rates in the minors and at Seattle. Although his upside is limited, don't judge him by last year's 5.91 ERA with the Mariners – his FIP was 2.26. The 27-year-old will compete for a bullpen spot in spring training.
