Hollands missed all of last season after undergoing Tommy John surgery in April. General manager Matt Klentak said Hollands is making good progress in his recovery and could be ready to pitch by Opening Day, so whether he will be in the mix for a bullpen job depends in part on his health. The Phillies are certain to have a number of veteran lefties in camp to compete with Hollands and others for a spot in their bullpen. Hollands was solid as a rookie in 2014, but he lacks overpowering stuff. He may end up back in Triple-A at the start of the year even if he is healthy.
Hollands surprised everyone jumping from Double-A to the majors after winning a relief job last spring. He was able to stick in the majors the entire season despite finishing with an underwhelming 4.40 ERA and 35:21 K:BB ratio in 47 innings. Hollands has an average fastball, but is able to generate a lot of groundballs with the pitch. He complements his fastball with a slider, cutter and changeup. Hollands was shut down in September due to a Grade 2 flexor strain in his elbow, but he hopes to be ready for spring training.
