Jeff Bagwell: Expected to Retire
1BFree Agent
December 13, 2006
Bagwell (shoulder) is expected to announce his retirement sometime this week, the Houston Chronicle reports.
ANALYSIS
After attempting to come back last season, Bagwell's arthritic shoulder proved to be too much to handle. Still, it was a great career capped by the Astros' National League pennant in 2005, although he spent much of the season on the DL because of his shoulder. Including last season, he played all 16 years of his career in Houston, and retires as the Astros' franchise leader in homers (449) and RBI (1,529). He also finishes his career with a lifetime batting average of .297, and has a legitimate shot to make the Hall of Fame.

He looked done--a bum shoulder--early in the year, and nothing in his late-season and postseason work changed that assessment. At best, he can be a platoon 1B/mascot for the Astros. If you're looking to fill 1B/mascot on your roster, take Julio Franco.
Bagwell played through another season with a banged up shoulder and his production at the plate took a big hit. Bagwell hit just 27 home runs in 2004, his lowest such output since 1995. The perennial All-Star has vowed to change his "sitting down" approach at the plate for a more conventional upright style and it will be interesting as to how he'll adapt to that change in the upcoming season.
In 2003, Bagwell regained some of the power he had lost in 2002, but at the expense of his batting eye, posting his first sub-.400 OBP (.373) since 1993. He turns 36 in May, so the likelihood of a further decline is higher than a return to previous form. Don't confuse his decline with a lack of value however - 30-plus homers and 100 RBI are nothing to sniff at.
Bagwell had his least productive season in 2002 since his injury-marred 1995 season, producing fewer homers, RBI's, and runs since that season, and tying his career low in stolen bases with seven. Bagwell had already begun to run less frequently a few years ago, but the drop in power is disturbing. Bagwell had shoulder surgery in October 2001, and spent much of the season trying to recover strength in that shoulder. The verdict is still out whether he'll ever regain full strength in his shoulder.
