Castilla announced his retirement from baseball Wednesday after Mexico's 4-3 win over Venezuela in the Carribean World Series, Newsday reports.
ANALYSIS
This move doesn't come as much surprise from the 39-year-old, who was unable to play well enough for an everyday job last season. Castilla retires as Mexico's all-time leading home-run hitter in MLB, with 320 homers during his 16-year career.

A hot start at the plate evaporated quickly, and Castilla degenerated into an aging slugger who can't hit at sea level, as predicted. His defense got him another shot in San Diego, but if his knee continues to give him problems the end is a lot closer for Castilla than the Padres might care to admit.
Castilla put up monster numbers a year ago, but Washington's humid summer air compared to Coors Field will definitely hurt his production and average. He has consistently put up good power numbers even away from Coors, however, and should get some RBI chances hitting in the middle of the Nationals' revamped order.
Castilla had very surprising turnaround last season and likely extended his career a few seasons. He looked to be nearly out of baseball after hitting .232 in 2002 with little power. However, a wrist injury the prior season may have been more of a factor than most thought as he regained his home run stroke and hit 22 dingers. Still, as surprised as we were about his turn around, we'd be even more surprised if he repeated it. He still seldom walks and at age 36 the risk is to the downside. His signing with the Rockies will probably overvalue him in some leagues by owners eager to get a Coors Field player. He's currently slated to bat sixth in their lineup.
The Braves loved Castilla's glove so much last year that Bobby Cox was hesitant to take him out of the lineup even though he posted some of the worst numbers by any hitter in the major leagues. He didn't hit for average, his power disappeared and he drew a paltry 22 walks. Except for a brief revival in his partial season in Houston, the last three years have seen his skills diminish. He may keep the job out of spring training, but another few months of hitting like he did last year and even Bobby Cox will be forced to look elsewhere. We don't expect a rebound.

Castilla recently said that it will be hard to lure him back to the majors unless he has a guaranteed contract. He is currently enjoying some rare summer time off with his family in Colorado. Vinny says that his long-term plans are to manage in his native Mexico and that he hopes to work in some capacity for the Rockies someday, according to the Denver Post.
