2003
Cruz continues to bounce around as a veteran reserve infielder, although he wasn't able to repeat his usefulness at the plate from 2004. If he somehow falls into the starting 2B job in St. Louis, he should be good for double-digit home runs and not much else.
Though Cruz hit surprisingly well last season, the signing of Omar Vizquel means slim playing time for him in 2005. His reliable glove provides that he'll be the first to play if either Vizquel or second baseman Ray Durham goes down, but otherwise he'll be playing much less than last season.
Cruz had career bests in homers and RBI in 2003, which still only translated into a .647 OPS. Whichever team signs Cruz and gives him a full-time job will get what they deserve, after seeing him draw only 13 walks all season.
This guy just won’t go away. While stealing valuable developmental time away from Ramon Vazquez last season, Cruz enjoyed a renaissance of sorts (by his standards) in San Diego where he hit .263 in 151 games. His range is waning, his arm is weakening, and his bat is still in and out of a coma. Sadly, there are plenty of teams whose front office would consider these traits worthy of being handed the starting job - the Orioles are a natural fit.
