Juan Gonzalez: Incommunicado With Cards
OFSt. Louis Cardinals
April 20, 2008
The Cardinals have heard nothing from Gonzalez (abdominal strain) since he went back to Puerto Rico last month, the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports.
ANALYSIS
It's a little odd, as the Cardinals are the only organization willing to give Gonzalez a shot, that he's been so mum on whether he wants to even return. If you threw a reserve pick Gonzalez's way, it might be time to find a safer bet.

Gonzalez's Hall-of-Fame resume will read a .295 batting average, 434 home runs and at least three professional organizations who felt milked by a former star who was more interested in money than playing. Hoping for a repeat of 2001 rather than 2004, Cleveland got the 2004 model, which gained the Indians one official at bat. He's a long shot and an incentive-laden contract away from another chance.
Even when he was healthy last year, Gonzalez wasn’t the same hitter who socked 40 home runs for three straight seasons in 1996-1998. Back problems limited him to just 33 games last season and he now hasn't played more than 100 games in three seasons due to a variety of injuries. Gonzalez will have to fight to win a starting job this spring and his career may be over.
Gonzalez was putting together a nice season until a strained calf ended his season, and his tenure in Texas, in mid-July. He's signed with Kansas City and we think there's still a solid year or two left in him.
Any hitter will tell you that nagging hand injuries can destroy a season, which is exactly what happened to Gonzalez. He was never healthy, and news so far on the hand this off-season has been encouraging. He's a pretty reliable 140-game a year player. Playing in hitter-friendly stadium could see him post his first 40-HR season since 1998, with a return to at least the 30-HR plateau all but a given. Think major rebound here.
