Higginson missed most of last season after having surgery to clean up a bone chip and other debris from his right elbow. His solid on-base skills should enable him to find a spot as a reserve outfielder and bat off the bench provided he doesn't retire.
Higginson signed a four-year, $35.4 million extension in 2001 and has disappointed every year since. With the emergence of Craig Monroe last season, Higginson became Detroit's backup right fielder, and barring an injury to Monroe, there is no reason to expect Higginson to regain his starting role in 2005.
For the third consecutive year Higginson's production declined in virtually every offensive facet. It's unlikely he'll surprise anyone this year.
The numbers took a hit for the second year in a row, as Higginson battled health issues (a bad hamstring cost him a month) and focus issues (he was very critical of the Jeff Weaver trade and his name was in trade rumors most of the second half even though he has a no-trade clause). As it turns out, Higginson isn't going anywhere -- he was thrilled to see Alan Trammell get the manager's job and immediately withdrew his offseason trade request. Higginson is no longer a star, but a .285 average, 20 home runs and 15 stolen bases all look like reachable targets for 2003.
