Walker was traded from the Cubs to San Diego on July 31 and went from being an everyday player to a utility role at second and third base. He’s not a great defender, but is a solid hitter, especially among second basemen. Walker hit .278/.356/.398 in 442 at-bats last year with nine homers and 53 RBI. With the Padres signing Marcus Giles, Walker will reprise his utility role.
The Cubs picked up their $2.5 million option on Walker for 2006 not because they want him on the team, but merely because it's a good value. Walker makes good contact, hits for average, gets on base and even has some pop in his bat for a second baseman. At press time, GM Jim Hendry is trying to shop Walker, whose average glove work doesn't endear him to manager Dusty Baker.
Walker brings good hitting skills to the table, combining decent plate discipline with a fair amount of pop for a middle infielder. His average-at-best work with the glove often relegates him to a part-time role, but he heads into the season the Cubs full-time second baseman.
Walker reaped the benefits of being in baseball's most prolific lineup in 2003, but opens 2004 without a set starting job. He doesn't do a whole lot special, but will not hurt a fantasy team. He'll compete with Mark Grudzielanek for playing time at second base and could even get time at third base.
Walker hits for average and tends to stay reasonably healthy, but how else does he help you? His power is only middling and he doesn't run much (only eight SB's in 2002, offset against five CS's). The trade to Boston probably helps Walker, both in terms of home ballpark and in getting the opportunity to hit in a stronger batting order. Walker turns 30 in May – it's getting late to expect him to develop any additional power.
