The Padres released Ashby (elbow) on Thursday, the San Diego Union Tribune reports.
ANALYSIS
Ashby had made just two relief apperances in the last two years after undergoing Tommy John surgery in 2003. "I've known Andy a long time and he's one of my all-time favorite players," Padres' manager Bruce Bochy said. Ashby was a key part of the rotation on Padres' NL West championship team of 1996 and World Series runner-up squad of 1998.

Ashby's career is probably over. Unfortunately, no one's told him yet. He's still trying to come back from Tommy John surgery that put him out of commission in 2003. At 39, he's no one to consider even if he manages to earn a rotation spot.
Still recovering from reconstructive elbow surgery, Ashby attempted to make his comeback in September, but had to be shut down after two outings. He'll make another attempt in 2005, most likely with the Padres, but at this point we have no expectations for him.
Ashby underwent Tommy John surgery last year and had been pitching poorly prior to that. His career is likely over at this point. Don't look for him to attempt a comeback until 2005.
Ashby rebounded fairly well from a disastrous campaign with the Phillies in 2000 and a torn flexor muscle in 2001. He had his best year since 1998, although the win total didn't reflect it. He will make $8 million this year and if he throws at least 169 innings, he'll guarantee himself $8.5 million in 2004 at the age of 38. Expect Ashby to earn that contract guarantee.
