Dreifort announced his retirement, the Associated Press reports. He's set to have arthroscopic surgery on his knee in a few weeks - his 16th surgery since his playing career began.
ANALYSIS
Dreifort's five-year, $55 million contract stands as the primary example of the risk of signing promising pitchers to long-term deals without a proven track record. Still, he was a dominant pitcher in the few months of his career when he was fully healthy.

If you needed an example of why A.J. Burnett's five-year, $55 million deal is a bad idea, look no further than Dreifort's history with the Dodgers. Sure, he's an extreme example, but the principle remains the same - counting on any pitcher, let alone with an extensive injury history, to stay healthy over the course of a five-year contract is just asking for trouble. Dreifort managed only 205.2 innings over his five-year deal, one that is finally off the books for the Dodgers in 2006.
Dreifort made his annual trip to the DL in August last season with what turned out to be a season-ending knee injury. He's not expected to be ready for Opening Day and may miss the entire season. Dreifort is one of the most injury prone pitchers in baseball and should be avoided on draft day.
Dreifort has now made only 26 starts over the past three seasons. The number of operations he has had during that time is close to the number of wins he has posted. Tread carefully, if he can somehow stay healthy for an entire year at this point it would surprise us.
Despite not throwing a major league pitch since mid-2001, Dreifort is still owed $35 million over the next three years. Rehabbing him is like playing the game "Operation." After reconstructive elbow surgery in 2001, it was arthroscopic knee surgery last year.
