Eischen had surgery for a torn rotator cuff last June and will have to prove himself this spring to earn a roster spot in Detroit. If he is able to bounce back from the surgery then the Tigers may have found a second lefty for their pen on the cheap.
Now in his mid-30s, Eischen remains an effective left-handed reliever when he can stay healthy, something that's been difficult for him the last two seasons. He's little more than waiver wire fodder at this point in his career.
Eischen had what was supposed to be minor arthroscopic surgery in the offseason to remove bone spurs, but he didn't make it back into the lineup until August. Assuming he's 100%, he should once again be the serviceable bullpen lefty he was in 2003.
To what should have been no one's great surprise Eischen failed to duplicate his amazing 2002. His numbers weren't terrible though, and last time we checked he was still left-handed -- he'll find a job somewhere, don't worry.
Eischen is the latest player to make big-buck contracts for middle relievers look silly, as he came from out of nowhere to put up freakishly good numbers (1.34 ERA, 43 hits and a 51:18 K:BB ratio in 54 innings) out of the Expos bullpen. Another year even close to that, and he'll probably be receiving one of those silly contracts.
