Jose Lima

Lima would not have made 32 starts for any other major league team in 2005. But the Royals weren't headed anywhere and had trouble filling out the rotation due to injuries and poor performances. He was in a great situation with the Dodgers in 2004 - a pitcher's park with good defense. The Royals did not offer good defense and having to face one more potent bat in the lineup in the AL was not a good thing for Lima. If all goes as it should for Lima and the Royals, he'll be pitching in the NL in 2006.

Lima was very effective for the Dodgers last season. He's not an overpowering pitcher but instead relies on a change-up to induce groundballs. Lima is prone to the long ball, however, so the move away from Dodger Stadium to Kansas City makes him a risky play.

As quickly as Lima Time started in Kansas City, it ended. Lima was pulled off of the scrap heat and he responded with seven straight wins. Even when on the disabled list, Lima was active on the bench, earning fan-favorite status. The key with Lima is health. If he's in good shape, he has enough moxie and fastball to win. But when he strains a groin, he loses a few miles on his fastball and becomes batting practice. He's earned another chance but he seems to have burned another bridge complaining about contract issues with the Royals. Look for him to sign with someone off of his beaten path, so a team other than Houston, Detroit or Kansas City.
