Mercker (back) will announce his retirement at a press conference on Monday, the Cincinnati Enquirer reports.
ANALYSIS
Given that he's struggled with injuries and that he'll turn 41 in February, this should come as little surprise. Those interested in trivia should take note that the journeyman left-hander retires as the last Atlanta Brave to throw a no-hitter (1994).

Mercker is going to attempt to return from reconstructive elbow surgery, but the odds are against him pitching in any sort of meaningful role until late in the season.
Mercker is a fungible left-handed set-up man at this point in his career. In comparison to the funny money handed out to relievers of all stripes this offseason, the two-year, $2.6 million deal Mercker signed before the 2005 season looks like a bargain. Of course, that still doesn't matter to your fantasy squad, unless you use holds as a category.
Mercker will return as a left-handed middle reliever for the Reds. He's still reasonably effective, but could stand to cut down on walks to right-handed batters.
Mercker altered his delivery two years ago and has been an effective reliever ever since. While he likely won't land a prominent role in the Cubs bullpen, he could be effective as a lefty specialist.
Mercker's new sidearm delivery made him an effective lefty specialist until a horrific hand injury in June altered his season.
