When Van Poppel left the Mets on Sunday, he didn't explain his departure to the club's hierarchy, the team's official website reports.
ANALYSIS
Van Poppel merely packed his bags and left and the Mets listed him as "retired" in their media notes Monday. But he did explain his reasons to at least one of his almost teammates. Van Poppel had concluded there would be no place for him in the Mets' bullpen, even though manager Willie Randolph and pitching coach Rick Peterson have made no determinations about whom will pitch the innings between starters and closer Braden Looper. Van Poppel told a teammate his desire to pitch in the big leagues wasn't so great that he could tolerate a return to the minor leagues. Moreover, his mother has become increasingly ill with cancer. His legacy will be one of a player rushed to the major leagues before he was ready all because he negotiated a clause in his contract requiring him to be promoted to the big leagues, even though he wasn't ready for that level of competition.

Van Poppel is versatile enough to hurt you as either a starter or as a reliever. He's had brief glimpses of mediocrity, but he's been sufficiently marginalized so as to prevent you from the temptation of adding him as a flier in the late rounds of your draft.
Van Poppel showed some signs of competence as a starter towards the end of the season, getting four starts with the Reds in September. Two caveats about putting too much stock in those four starts: two of those starts came against a bare-bones Pirates lineup, and Van Poppel's home run rate is still rather high.
Van Poppel's peripherals (80 hits, 85 strikeouts in 72.2 innings) suggest something better than the 5.45 ERA he posted. He was terrible after the All-Star break, posting a 6.82 ERA and yielding eight home runs in just 33 innings, though his strikeout rate jumped dramatically (50 Ks in 33 innings, compared to just 35 in 39.2 innings before the break). Some hidden value here that should emerge in 2003.
