Veres is pitching for the York Revolution in the independent Atlantic League and still wants to work his way back to the majors, the Denver Post reports.
ANALYSIS
He is hopeful that the Rockies, one of his former major league teams, will give him a shot in Triple-A. Veres is most noteworthy for his attempt to become the first major league pitcher with an artificial hip. At age 41, Veres is racing the clock.

Past Fantasy Outlooks
2004
2003
Veres was plagued by shoulder problems for most of 2003, managing only 33 innings. The Cubs won't re-sign him for 2004, but at press-time, there is some talk that he could wind up back in Colorado where he was once the closer and get a shot to compete for the job once again, provided, of course, that his shoulder holds up. Veres has decent command and average stuff, and as such, has been a serviceable closer/setup guy over the past few seasons.
The Cardinals declined their $5.25 million option on the former closer because you don’t pay middle relievers closer money (some would argue that you shouldn’t pay closers closer money, but that’s besides the point). As a result, Veres is a free agent. If Veres, who has a 196/92 K/BB ratio over the last three seasons, signs for a club that plays in a pitcher’s park, he’ll do a decent job as a setup guy.
