Kroon, who has the highest official radar gun reading (161 kph, 100 mph) in Japanese league history, went 31-for-34 in save chances for Yokohama in 2007 (2.76 ERA, 1.180 WHIP, 65:15 K:BB ratio in 42.1 innings), and has averaged 12.3 strikeouts per nine innings in his three seasons in Japan. Kroon was a free agent this winter and got some interest from MLB clubs, but he wound up accepting a one-year, $3 million offer from Yomiuri with a mutual option for 2009. Keep him on your radar screen for a potential return to the States in 2009, depending on how his gig with Yomiuri turns out.
Yes, this is the same Kroon who couldn't stick with the Reds or Rockies, but he's become the best closer in Japan over the past two seasons. He posted a 3.00 ERA in 47 games last year, with 27 saves, an 0.96 WHIP, and a 70:8 K:BB in 48 IP. He's the only player ever to hit 161 kph (100 mph) in a league game in Japanese history. Kroon's two-year contract with Yokohama expires at the end of the 2007 season. He could return to the States in 2008, so he's a legitimate prospect in keeper leagues.
