Wright was awful in three starts for the O's after coming over in an offseason deal for Chris Britton, before he lost the rest of the year with a shoulder injury. When he returns, it'll have to be with a new organization, if he returns.
Somehow, Wright started Game 4 of the ALDS for the Yankees, which ultimately allowed him to officially seal his own fate with the club. Wright has been traded to the Orioles since then, where the Yankees hope to take advantage of the .314 lefties hit off of him in 2006. On the plus side, Wright is re-united with pitching coach Leo Mazzone, who coached the 30-year-old righty back in his career-best 2004 season. Given the slim potential for a return to back to decency, Wright's a late-round dart at this point.
Wright's abysmal performance in 2005 lends more credence to the Leo-Mazzone-is-God theory. Even when Wright was healthy he wasn't anywhere close to the dominant pitcher he was for the Braves in 2004. There have been rumors that Wright could move to the bullpen both to protect his health and to hide his lack of a third pitch, and given the performances of Shawn Chacon, Aaron Small and Chien-Ming Wang, the Yankees may choose to go in that direction. Let someone else take a chance on Wright.
Wright had a spectacular season just one year after posting a 8.71 ERA for San Diego. He may be the poster child for how Braves pitching coach Leo Mazzone can turn almost any struggling pitcher with talent into a solid big league arm. Wright signed with the Yankees in the offseason but the New York spotlight and two major shoulder surgeries in his past say a repeat of his success isn't a good bet.
After two injury-plagued years and a poor start to the season with San Diego, the Braves took a chance on the waiver wire with Wright. He pitched well in his brief trial the Braves and should get a shot a prominent bullpen job this spring. He still has a mid-90's fastball and pitching coach Leo Mazzone is a miracle worker, so he could surprise in a relief role. Injuries are always a concern as he struggled with an abdominal injury early last season. A permanent move to the bullpen may keep him healthier.
The Padres view Wright as insurance at closer, as Trevor Hoffman is coming off surgery that repaired fraying of his rotator cuff and labrum. Wright has plenty of health issues of his own - wait to see him perform before you invest in his potential.
