Dennys Reyes

Reyes led the Cardinals with 75 appearances and 18 holds in 2009. He split the lefty specialist role with Trever Miller in 2009, but Miller pitched much better and will probably have a bigger role with the Cardinals than Reyes will in 2010. Reyes pitched fine against lefties (.207 BAA), but really shouldn't be allowed to face righties, as he seems to lose his control when facing them.

Reyes rebounded from elbow issues in 2007 to post strong numbers last season and dominate lefties. Reyes had a 39:15 K:BB ratio after some problems with walks in 2006. He again was overpowering against left-handed batters, allowing just a .537 OPS. He'll be a key lefty set-up man in a bullpen wherever he lands.

Reyes will be a primary set-up man for the Twins if healthy this spring. He struggled with inflammation in his shoulder in May and had his season ended in August due to an inflamed tendon in his left elbow, which he's trying rehab rather than have surgery. His outstanding 2006 season sticks out like a sore thumb compared to the rest of his journeyman career. Despite his decent looking 3.99 ERA last season, he had a just a 21:21 K:BB ratio. Although some of his decline may be due to injury, his fantasy value should be limited considering his health is uncertain and his upside is that of a lefty specialist.

Reyes had a career year as a set-up man for the Twins. The hard-throwing lefty may have finally found his calling as a lefty specialist and found the right coaching with the Twins to correct his previous wildness. Reyes' 0.89 ERA was the sixth-lowest ERA since 1900 among pitchers with at least 50 innings. His journeyman track record suggests he can't duplicate those numbers, but he'll be counted on as the primary lefty in the Minnesota bullpen.

Reyes was one of few bright spots for the Royals during the tumultuous first half of the season. He started in long relief and earned his way into the rotation with strong performances. By July, however, the inconsistent and wild eight-year major-league veteran had returned to form. On one hand, the tad weighty left-hander may have just been gassed by the career-high in innings pitched. On the other hand, he just might not be very good.

The well-traveled lefty has pitched in the majors for seven years but doesn't appear to be getting any better. Lower back troubles might have caused his terrible 2003 campaign. The Royals are hoping that those troubles were the root cause, and took a gamble on him. He'll get a shot to compete for a job and at 27 could still turn things around.

Reyes was acquired at the trade deadline from Colorado, Texas gave him a brief stint as a starter only to return him to the bullpen the final few weeks. He would benefit from starting 10-12 consecutive games before a team decides his worth, but the litany of fourth/fifth starter types that Texas is expected to pitch will likely prevent that. Will likely get a look in spring as a candidate for a rotation spot, but will need to impress right out of the gate if he wants to keep the spot.
